Today’s stage sees us tackle the magnificent Beara Peninsula as we head from Bantry in county Cork to the picturesque county Kerry town of Kenmare.
In the early stages of the route we’ll pass through the villages of Glengarriff and Castletown Berehaven, which offers the cyclists some wonderful views over Bere Island and Sheeps Head, before we stop for coffee and cake in the village of Allihies.
Once back on the bike, the route is undulating but none of the inclines are particularly difficult in this area, and for lunch we’ll take a left hand turn off the main road into the tiny ‘Hidden Gem’ village of Kilmacalogue and the wonderful Helen’s Bar. This converted old house sits beside a small fishing harbour and the fresh salmon sandwiches are legendary!
The final part of today’s journey brings us to Kenmare and is one of the most popular overnight stops on the whole event. Sitting at the head of Kenmare Bay this is a really picturesque town, full off traditional Irish bars and the famous Irish ‘craic’.
